Memorial in Prisoje, erected on August 12th, 2018

Prisoje

The town of Prisoje near Tomislavgrad has a story from World War II that is similar to almost all other Croatian towns. This town  also had its victims. Out of a total of 188 victims, whose names are on the memorial, 112 of them are victims of the followers of the Yugoslav communist ideology – the partisans.

Data on the victims of World War II were compiled on the basis of several sources: a census conducted by the parish priest Don Mihovil Zrno on May 17th, 1989 at the request of the Bishop of Mostar and Duvno at the time, Msgr. Pavle Žanić; the death registry of the Prisoje Parish; data published in Duvanjski Zbornik /The Duvno Collection/; and data from the Prisoje parish census books. Of course, everything was finally checked in the field, that is, after the preliminary data were provided to the general public, both in hard copy and on the website.

On August 12th, 2018, a memorial to the victims of the two world wars and the Homeland War was unveiled in Prisoje near Tomislavgrad. The monument is called “CROSS – Portal to Eternity”, and  is the work of academic sculptor Anđelko Mikulić, who shaped and arranged five stone blocks with Croatian insignia to form a triumphal arch – a portal in the shape of a cross that symbolizes the passage to eternity.

The names of 188 residents of Prisoje who died in the war conflicts of the 20th century are inscribed on the blocks. Our deceased do not need this monument; it means nothing to them, but it says a lot about us. We are called upon to honor our dead, to pray for them and to thank them.
